August Alsina is an undeniable talent.
The “No Love“ hitmaker took the world by storm in the 2010s thanks to his prowess with the pen and a voice to die for.
For years, he released hit after hit, gaining a dedicated following that has never left him to this day.
However, he has found himself in the middle of some drama several times, and the latest involved his relationship with singer LA Zu, known as Zu.
The pair got together sometime in or before 2022, and in an episode of The Surreal Life, Alsina revealed that he had found a different kind of love.
However, this announcement was not well-received by some of his ardent followers and the wider public, and for two years, the duo faced accusations from all corners.
In September 2025, they finally took on the critics head-on and claimed each other.
Being out and as famous as Alsina is comes with a unique set of challenges, which can be highlighted in the 2023 song “2am” sung by the two.
August Alsina and Zu Had to Hide Their Relationship
The song is produced in the signature August Alsina sound with casual R&B beats that don’t overshadow his voice.
“2 am and I’m thinking about, hoping you’ll tell me to come through,” Zu sings in his verse.
The music video is set at night in the streets of an American city, where the duo drives around while singing.
There is some b-footage of them shirtless in a black void.
Were it not for the occasional “girl” thrown in there, one would think they were singing about each other. Which they were, but had to hide it.
It’s a common thing queer artists have to do to make their music mainstream, even when the lyrics and music video are gay as f*ck (and that’s good).
But if they didn’t have to field attacks everywhere, maybe they would have made something different.
But as it stands, 2 am is a testament to the resilience of their love, as it tells their story of yearning and desire.
Watching the music video in 2025 gives a wholly new perspective on their relationship, and now that they’re out in the open, it makes it even more precious.
