Chicago Med came bearing news when it returned for Season 10.
The team saw two new additions, Dr. Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos) and Dr. John Frost (Darren Barnet), arrive at the ED to cover certain fields.
Frost was the hospital’s new pediatrician, who believed children should be consulted when decisions about their health are being made.
Frost’s arrival did not make many waves with other characters on the staff like Lenox did, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have an impact.
He and Dr. Mitch Ripley (Luke Mitchell) developed a quick friendship.
Now, Ripley’s vibe and arc were not the best, but Frost cracked through the tough exterior, and soon enough, the duo started vibing.
Few people can make Ripley smile, and Frost is one of them.
If they were an opposite sex duo, Chicago Med would have had them kissing by the second episode.
A Romance Between Frost and Ripley Would Be Good for ‘Chicago Med’
All One Chicago shows have been on the air for over a decade and none has wowed with its queer representation.
Chicago Fire tried but abandoned the pursuit way too early. They have a gay character who they’ve turned into nothing but wallpaper.
A Ripley and Frost romance in Chicago Med would rectify this gaping gap in the show’s representation.
We know they can do it because they’ve done some compelling episodes focused on gay and queer patients.
It would be a nice break from all those straight couples who create drama for drama’s sake.
Nothing makes a ship hit better than when characters have insane chemistry from the word go, and these have it.
But How Would It Work?
The show has said in no strong terms that both men are straight, but are they?
What if Ripley can never seem to make a straight relationship work because he is not?
Given his troubled upbringing, Ripley might have been struggling to come to terms with his queerness, and pushing it down caused him to become the self-destructive force he is.
It wouldn’t be hard to establish this past because the character has not been on the show long, making him essentially a blank slate.
Frost would be an even easier option.
Picture this: he was pushed into the limelight way too early and had to hide his queerness because it would affect his marketability as an actor.
He was also sexually abused by an older woman when he was young, and that confused him for a long time.
He tried to start relationships with men, but that never quite worked out — until now.
Or, the show can do what 9-1-1 did and not make a huge deal out of it.
They are attracted to each other, and that’s enough.
Must I think about everything for everyone? Writers, you’re welcome.
‘Chicago Med’s Team Is Aware of Ripley and Frost’s Chemistry
“The writers and all our friends at Wolf Entertainment, we all love seeing Ripley and Frost together,” showrunner Allen MacDonald told TV Insider.
“We think that we got a real, true, genuine bromance going on there,” he added. All they need is to remove the b out of bromance, and what do we have?
“And we also love those scenes because they tease each other, they respect each other, they’re honest with each other, but they also make each other laugh and smile,” MacDonald said.
Chicago Med would be wise to take advantage of this chemistry; it could be the thing that makes the show legendary.
What do you think? Should they do it?
