Sometimes it feels like the world does not like the current version of you, and some people decide to change to fit in better. In the Netflix dramedy Boots, Cameron (Miles Heizer) decides to join the Marines to learn forge a new version of himself.
Netflix has released the trailer for the series created by Andy Parker and based on the memoir The Pink Marine by Greg Cope White.
Dealing with themes of bullying, loneliness, being closeted, homophobia, and more, Boots promises to be an emotional ride full of laughter and heartbreak.
The trailer previews the show, which follows a closeted teenager named Cameron and his best friend, Ray (Liam Oh). Cameron is on the receiving end of bullying, and together with his friend, they decided to join the Marines so that they can change themselves.
However, the journey to becoming a different person has never been easy and involves a lot of pain and suffering. The question becomes: is the will to change strong enough to help someone soldier through it?
The Marine Corps is another world by itself, and if bullying in high school was bad, it’s worse here. Boots are treated like the scum of the earth, not worth being stepped on.
There, Cameron and Ray meet other recruits who also want something different for themselves.
Being Gay in the Marine Corps is Not a Walk in the Park
However, the pain and torture become too much for some of them, and loneliness sets in. The structure is rigid, and behavior is closely monitored.
If it’s hard for regular recruits, imagine how hard it is for a closeted guy like Cameron. Will he be able to adhere to all the rules, including one that prohibits homosexuality? It’s not like the environment full of buff sexy men bathing in the nude together is making it easy for him.
But Cameron is lucky since he has his bestie to lean on for support, and they can be open with each other.
It doesn’t mean that Cameron will like everything Ray has to say. For example, everything they’ve been through is just the first day.
Thirteen more weeks to go!
The show’s official description reads:
“Boots is a one-hour comedic drama that delivers an irreverent, off-beat take on the coming-of-age story. Set in the tough, unpredictable world of the 1990s US Marine Corps—when being gay in the military was still illegal—the series follows directionless, closeted Cameron Cope (Heizer) and his best friend Ray McAffey (Oh), the son of a decorated Marine, as they join a diverse group of recruits.
“Together, this ensemble navigates the literal and metaphorical landmines of boot camp, forging unlikely bonds and discovering their true selves in an environment designed to push them to their limits. With sharp wit and plenty of heart, Boots is about friendship, resilience, and finding your place in the world—even when that world seems determined to keep you in line or leave you behind.”
Boots make their way to Netflix on Thursday, October 9. Watch the trailer below.
