‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ Sequel — Plot, Returning Cast, New Director, and Everything Else You Need to Know

It’s official! The much-anticipated sequel to the 2023 hit gay romcom Red, White & Royal Blue is happening, and it has a new title.

The sequel, titled Red, White & Royal Wedding, hints at an epic event on the horizon: the wedding between Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar-Perez) and Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine).

The sequel was announced a year ago, but there have been no major updates until this title reveal, which the movie’s official Twitter account shared.

It was also revealed that there will be a minor creative shake-up in the sequel.

Who Is Returning for the Red, White & Royal Blue Sequel?

The prequel’s leads are confirmed to return, reprising their respective characters.

“Hold on, I need a second,” Zhakar Perez posted on his Instagram account while reacting to the news.

Galitzine is currently filming He-Man for Amazon MGM, the studio behind the Red, White & Royal Blue sequel.

He will return for the sequel, despite expressing uncertainty about portraying queer characters as a straight man.

“I identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some incredible queer stories. I felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I’m taking up someone’s space, and perhaps guilt,” he told GQ.

Other cast members from the first film are yet to be confirmed for the sequel.

Who Is Behind ‘Red, White & Royal Wedding?’

The sequel features some changes in the creative department, with Matthew López stepping down as director.

However, he will continue his role as the writer with original book writer Casey McQuiston, in addition to both being executive producers. Gemma Burgess joins them as the third writer.

Jamie Babitt, the director behind the beloved queer romcom But I’m a Cheerleader, steps in to pilot this chapter of the story. Speaking about her new role, Babitt said:

“After directing But I’m a Cheerleader in my 20s, I’m thrilled to be back in the queer love universe of Red, White & Royal Wedding. We all need this kind of optimism, fantasy, and gay joy. I’m thrilled to work with this brilliant team.”

Lopez expressed excitement about the new team, saying,

“I’m excited we get to continue telling Alex and Henry’s story with Red, White & Royal Wedding. It’s been a blast to dream up the next chapter of their story as a producer and co-writer, and I’m delighted to be passing the directing baton to Jamie, whose vision and sense of humor will be a perfect match for our film.”

Similarly, McQuiston expressed excitement, saying,

“Working with this team to bring Red, White & Royal Blue to life has been a dream come true, and I hope readers and watchers alike will love how the story continues in the sequel.

“I’m so grateful to Matthew for all his hard work on the first movie and in co-creating this new story with me, and I know that Jamie has the vision, wit, and tenderness to take great care of Alex and Henry from here.”

Other executive producers include Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Michael McGrath, Jennifer Salke, and Michael Constable.

Has ‘Red White & Royal Wedding’ Begun Filming?

No, the movie is yet to begin production. However, Zhakhar Perez said that he heard the script is “very good.”

“I purposefully said, ‘Please do not share with me anything until we are ready to prep it, because I want plausible deniability’. I have not read a script, but I hear it’s very good,” he told Elle.
