Sebastian Stan and Leo Woodall have been cast as leads in Justin Kurzel‘s next film, Burning Rainbow Farm.
Variety reports that in the film inspired by real-life events, Stan and Woodall will play a gay couple who were involved in tense standoff with the police in 2001.
Stan will play Tom Crosslin while Woodall plays Rollie Rohm.
Crosslin and Rohm met in the ’90s and began a cannabis community on a farm in Michigan. This was a time when the substance was even more frowned upon than it might be now.
The law was on them soon, and after a strained relationship with local law enforcement, the police took their young son.
A dramatic standoff of Waco proportions ensued and ended in disaster when Crosslin and Rohm were shot and killed.
The film has been in development for a longtime with Stan initially attached to star in a planned 2017 production. However, that fell apart, and Kurzel took over the project seven years later.
Tommy Murphy, who wrote Holding the Man, wrote the screenplay based on Dean Kuipers‘ 2006 book Burning Rainbow Farm: How a Stoner Utopia Went Up in Smoke.
“Burning Rainbow is a love story about two outliers who raise their middle finger to hate and declare ‘This is who we are, and we dare you to take it from us’,” said Kurzel. He added:
“I’m excited to create this loveable and courageous couple with Sebastian and Leo, their union will be one to remember.”
Sebastian Stan and Leo Woodall Have Played Gay Characters Before
Stan might be know for his role in the MCU as Bucky Burnes but in 2012 he played T.J. Hammond in Greg Berlanti‘s USA Network drama, Political Animals.
T.J. was the gay son of a political American Family that had been in the highest offices of the land, including the presidency. He was forced to hide his sexuality to protect his parents’ political ambitions.
Stan also played a gay character in the 2009 drama Kings.
Woodall’s breakout role was in the second season of The White Lotus. He played a gay-adjacent character, infamous for having sex with his “uncle.”
He also starred in Apple TV+’s drama series Prime Target as the lead character Adam, who is queer or gay, the show doesn’t define his sexuality.
Both actors have been well-lauded for their projects in the past few years, making them some of the most sought-after actors.
